A Covington teen who died early Tuesday from injuries he received in a bicycle accident will be remembered for always having a smile on his face and for being a “remarkable” teen. Justin Addison, 16, was riding his bicycle on the St. Tammany Trace at around 5 p.m. Monday when he failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a GMC SUV, according to a St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office report. The collision happened where the Trace intersects with Josephine Street between Covington and Abita Springs, according to the report.

Justin Addison, 16, died early Tuesday from injuries he received after his bicycle collided with an SUV at the intersection of Josephine Street and the St. Tammany Trace Monday afternoon.

Addison died shortly after midnight, after several hours of surgery, Sgt. Sean Beavers said. St. Tammany Parish coroner Dr. Peter Galvan said Addison died from multiple traumatic injuries. His death was ruled accidental.

Investigators determined that the SUV’s driver, a Covington resident, was not at fault and was not cited, Beavers said

A one-vehicle accident in Ragland Monday claimed the life of a Ragland teenager, and sent two teenagers to area hospitals.

St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell identified the victim as Kristan Cox, 16.

Russell said the call came into Central Dispatch at 7:31 p.m. He pronounced Cox dead on the scene at 8:04 p.m. The cause of death was head trauma.

“She was riding in the back seat of the vehicle, and she was ejected from the vehicle,” Russell said. “She was not wearing a seatbelt.”

Ragland Police Chief James “Bubba “ Brown said the accident happened in the 900 block of Providence Road.

Brown said the vehicle was a 1998 Ford Mustang, and that the driver was a 16-year-old male. A 14-year-old female was riding in the passenger seat.

“Speed played a factor in the accident,” Brown said. “The driver lost control, went off the roadway, and struck a tree.”

Brown said Ragland Rescue responded to the accident. He said the driver was taken by Regional Paramedic Services ambulance to University Hospital in Birmingham, while the female passenger was taken by a private vehicle to St. Vincent’s St. Clair in Pell City.

“When she found out the driver had been taken to UAB, she wanted to go there, so she was taken there, treated and released,” Brown said. “Both the driver and passenger have been treated and released.”

Ragland High School Principal Roger Wilkinson said Kristan was a very sweet girl.

“This was her first year to be a cheerleader,” Wilkinson said. “She had a great personality and was very popular. Everyone is just in shock. It is one of those things you don’t ever want to deal with.”

Wilkinson said extra counselors are at the school if students need to talk to someone.

A Valley teen who dreamed of someday being in law enforcement was shot and killed Saturday night during a robbery at a Laveen mobile phone store.

The victim is identified as 18-year-old Jose Ruiz, an employee of the store.

Police 911 dispatchers received a call at about 7:30 p.m. from someone stating a door was open at the Boost Mobile store at 6115 S. 51st Ave.

The caller told police she had gone to the store and saw that the door was open and the light was on but no one appeared to be inside, according to Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump.

When officers arrived and searched the store, they found Ruiz’s body behind the counter, Crump said. He had suffered an apparent gunshot wound, Crump said.

“We believe at the time this robbery occurred, based on his location behind the counter, he was most likely trying to get to a panic button and an alarm button that they had behind the counter when he was shot to death,” Crump said.

Officers discovered there was evidence pointing to a robbery, according to Crump. “We believe the day’s receipts were taken,” he said.

The victim’s family – his parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters – rushed to the scene. They told police Ruiz had graduated from high school in May. He was currently working two jobs, one at Boost Mobile and another as a security guard.

The victim fought back when one assailant rifled through his pockets and was shot in the chest, police said. He was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Police were talking to two persons of interest.

According to the victim’s aunt, Kathy Jackson, Wright had been picked on at his previous high school because he was gay, which led him to transfer to Banner last year. He quickly made new friends, she said.

“He had made a big turnaround from the old school to this one,” Jackson said. “And now this happened.”

At the scene, the victim’s backpack remained lying the sidewalk near where he was shot as police combed the area for evidence

In wake of a 14-year-old junior varsity football player’s death following practice Wednesday, Oscar Smith has canceled its game against Deep Creek Thursday.

According to Leo Kosinski with the Chesapeake Police Department, medics responded to Oscar Smith High School shortly after 5 p.m. for a medical emergency involving a junior varsity football player.

Kosinski says the teen suffered a medical emergency during practice. After receiving first aid, he was transported to Chesapeake Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Kelly O’Sullivan with the Chesapeake Police Department identified the teen as JheVontae Davis, a sophomore.

“I went to middle school with him. We used to walk to 7-Eleven together. We had so much fun,” Oscar Smith student Joan Boothe said. “He was understanding. I’m going to miss him. There are not a lot of people who are like [him].”

Facebook and Twitter tributes poured in overnight into Thursday morning. Many students began a social media campaign to persuade their peers to wear blue and the number 63. Davis’ jersey number, on their hands Thursday.

A Chaska teenager has died after being shot in the head by an arrow. In a press release issued at 4 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, Chaska Police confirmed that Spencer Lucas Paul Swanson, 16, died Monday evening from injuries sustained after being hit with an arrow.

Police initially responded to an emergency call on Stanford Circle in Jonathan just before 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13.

“Two teenage best friends were at a home in Chaska. The one young man was accidentally shot in the head with a blunt shaft arrow,” wrote lawyer Marsh Halberg, a family friend who was asked to issue a statement to media on behalf of the family of the 16-year-old boy who shot the arrow.

Halberg confirmed that the arrow ricocheted off the ground prior to hitting the boy.

Swanson was taken to the Two Twelve Medical Center in Chaska before being transported to HCMC.

“We believe this was truly a tragic accident,” stated Halberg. “No alcohol or drugs were involved.”

Prior to Swanson’s death, the family of the other 16-year-old boy stated that they were “grief stricken” over the accident and asked “for support and prayers for the young man who was shot as well as his entire family.”

Somers High School is mourning the loss of a senior who died Thursday after a one-car crash in Massachusetts.

Nicholas Coleman was a strong student and an athlete, said his principal, Gary Cotzin.

“Nick was one of our top-flight students,” Cotzin said Friday. A cross-country runner and a lacrosse player, the 17-year-old was applying to Cornell University, he said.

Students gathered for a candlelight vigil Thursday night, Cotzin said. On Friday, they dressed up for school in Coleman’s honor and left letters and notes on his locker.

The school provided different outlets for them to talk about their loss, he said. Students could talk to a grief counselor in a private setting, share their thoughts with other students or go to a room where the music teacher played soothing tunes on a piano.

Students remembered Coleman as a likable person, Cotzin said. He was a friendly, smiling presence in the school of 545 students, they said.

According to police, the crash happened Wednesday night on Route 186 in East Longmeadow, near the Connecticut line. Police received a call from someone who discovered the car.
