An 18-year-old Smithfield teen died early Sunday morning after the car he was riding in hit a tree.
Suffolk Police Department spokeswoman Debbie George said the accident happened just after 2 a.m. in the 1700 block of Cherry Grove Road in Suffolk.
The driver of a vehicle was headed north when the car went off the road. The accident pinned both the driver and the passenger inside the car.
Medics extracted them from the vehicle and flew them to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in the Nightingale Air Ambulance.
Doctors pronounced the passenger dead a few hours later. Police identified him as 18-year-old Ian Burgett.
Monday, people stopped by to place flowers and a cross at the crash site. Burgett was a senior at Nansemond Suffolk Academy. Ashley Green, NSA Communications Coordinator, told WAVY.com, “We are very sad. The NSA family’s thoughts and prayers are with the Burgett family and other families in the NSA community.”
The driver’s injuries were non-life threatening. Suffolk police charged the driver, 17, with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and failure to wear a seatbelt.
