Early Saturday morning, Derrick Thomas, a 911 dispatcher for Gardendale, was on the job when he heard about a fatal car crash in Kimberly. His immediate thoughts went to family members. He was worried about his teenage brother and his wife’s teenage sisters.
Thomas sent a text message to his wife, Beverly Thomas, at 1:47 a.m.
The first call she made was to her youngest sister, Kristy Leigh Laney, 16, of Warrior. She was more like a daughter than a sister and had grown up with Beverly’s own daughter, Tristan. Kristy didn’t answer her phone.
Beverly and Kristy’s mother, Rita Little, said Kristy had been home all evening. But a group of friends had stopped by late to see if she wanted to go with them to get something to eat.
As more news started to come in about the wreck, Beverly Thomas’ fears were confirmed.
Kristy was one of two teenagers killed in the Saturday morning wreck on Morris Majestic Road in Kimberly. Her friend, Joseph Hall, 19, of Trafford, also was killed in the single-vehicle crash.
The driver, Jordan Carden, 19, of Morris, survived the crash. He remains in UAB Hospital. Another teenage passenger also survived, but was not named in the police report.
